Погребения варварских элит Северного Причерноморья на рубеже эр и их культурная идентичность
The reason for the preparation of this paper was the new information about dating of the Nogaychik Barrow. It includes artifacts, which are particularly characteristic for the Late Hellenistic period. All this suggests a date not later than the 1st century BC. However, it seems to be very hard for some scholars to accept this date. The likely reason for this is that this complex was once closely connected with the interpretation model of the Sarmatian archaeological culture which was developed in the 1980s and 1990s. According to this point of view (Raev 1986), the elite burial complexes appeared on the Lower Don suddenly, and not earlier than the mid-first century AD. In this view they should be associated with the nobility of one nomadic tribe, the Alans. In accordance with this concept, the Nogaychik Barrow has to be dated to the late first – early second century AD.
However, the Nogaychik Barrow does not have the features, which B. Raev pointed out as characteristic for the elite burials of the Don area in the late first and early second centuries AD. On the other hand, it is not the only elite burial complex of the North Pontic region, which dates to the Late Hellenistic period. Many rich burials complexes found on the steppes of the Lower Dnieper, Lower Don, Kuban and Lower Volga belong to the same chronological horizon.
The appearance of particularly rich burials in the archaeological cultures of the Lower Volga, the Lower Don and the Kuban in the first century BC could be connected with the increased activity and centralization of social elites, partly under the influence of the foreign policy of King Mithridates the VI Eupator of Pontus, who tried to attract the Barbarians of the North Pontic region allies in his fight against Rome.
