Марк Сальвий Отон: молодые годы будущего принцепса
В статье рассматривается информация источников о биографии М. Сальвия Отона до того, как он вступил в борьбу за власть. Прослежено его происхождение и семейные связи, показано, что его семья, не отличавшаяся знатностью, возвысилась, благодаря покровительству Ливии, Тиберия, а затем и Клавдия. Сам Отон в молодости был участником развлечений Нерона, что в дальнейшем породило рассказы о его распутном поведении. В статье обосновывается вывод, что Отон, несмотря на склонность к гедонистическому образу жизни, был не настолько развратен, как его описывают источники. Однако дружба с принцепсом давала ему значительное влияние, которым он пользовался в своих интересах. Придворная жизнь Отона закончилась после того, как Нерон вынудил его развестись с женой, Поппеей Сабиной, и сам взял ее в жены. В статье рассмотрены существующие истолкования этого происшествия и сделан вывод, что сам Отон не стремился свести свою жену с императором; когда это случилось, его реакция была негативной, но и он, и император предпочли не доводить дело до открытого скандала. В итоге Отон оказался наместником провинции Лузитания, где провел десять лет и проявил другую сторону своего характера – талант администратора и умение ладить с местными элитами. Именно там Отон начал превращаться в серьезного политика, которому суждено было получить императорскую власть, хотя и на очень короткое время.
