В рассказе о Галльском нашествии 390 г. Ливий (V. 39. 9—40. 1) и Плутарх (Camill. 21) описывают группу старцев, которые обрекли себя на смерть ради спасения более молодых сограждан, способных оказать сопротивление врагу. Эти старые люди некогда были консулами и справляли триумфы, но в момент нашествия они были уже слишком дряхлыми и больными для борьбы с врагом, и поэтому объявили о своей готовности умереть вместе с родным городом. Надев праздничные одежды и держа знаки былого достоинства и почестей, они уселись в курульные кресла у входа в свои дома и стали ждать прихода галлов. Вместе с Великим понтификом они прочли подходящую случаю молитву, в которой обрекали себя смерти за свою родину и народ.
Галлы, проникнув в город, с удивлением и восхищением взирали на этих людей, подобно статуям, восседавших у портиков своих домов, окружавших форум. В торжественности их облика и выражении лиц было нечто не от мира сего, сближающее их с богами. Один из галлов решил дотронуться до бороды Марка Папирия, в ответ на что тот ударил противника своим жезлом из слоновой кости. Рассвирепевший галл выхватил меч и зарубил Папирия, тут же и другие старики были убиты прямо в своих креслах. После их убийства город был подожжен галлами и полностью уничтожен, за исключением Капитолия, где скрывались сенаторы и воины (militares iuventus).
