2. Requirements for the formatting of the manuscript

2.1. Structure of the presentation of the material:

in Russian: UDC index, article title, author’s initials and surname, information about the author (academic degree, academic title, the academic affiliation(s), e-mail, ORCID), abstract, keywords, text of the article, acknowledgments and sources of funding for the work (if any); notes (page-by-page automatic footnotes); list of references; list of used abbreviations.

in English: title of the article, initials and surname of the author, information about the author (name, patronymic initial and surname, e-mail, ORCID), abstract, keywords.

2.2. Requirements for the abstract:

– the optimal size is 300–500 characters;

– should reflect the content of the article, preserving its structure – introduction, goals and objectives, research methods, results, conclusion (findings);

– shouldn’t contain complicated formulations, repeat the title of the article, be filled with general words that don’t reflect the essence of the study.

2.3. The text should be formatted with single line spacing and margins: top – 3 cm, bottom – 6.7 cm, right – 2.8 cm, left – 5.4 cm. Font size – 10 (Bookman Old Style), footnotes – page by page, continuous within the article, also with one interval, font size – 9. The Greek text should be presented using the Palatino Linotype font. Please pay close attention to the diacritics when setting the Greek text.

2.4. In references please adhere to the following standards as much as possible: rubrication of works by ancient historians – Latin for books, Arabic for chapters and paragraphs, etc. References to works of ancient authors are given in parentheses in the text itself, not in a footnote. The author’s name and the title of the work are given in generally accepted Latin abbreviations without using of italics. Chapter and paragraph numbers are indicated by a period, without a space. For example – Dio Cass. XXXVII.27–28.

2.5. Between the numbers instead of a hyphen should be used a short dash without spaces: 1945–1965, 15th–16th centuries (by simultaneously pressing the Ctrl and “–” keys in the far right corner of the keyboard). The long dash (—) is not used at all, as is the letter “ё”. Between the initials and the author’s surname, use a non-breaking space (L.T. Kandin) by simultaneously pressing the left Ctrl, Shift and space keys. There is no space between the initials.

2.6. Illustration tables have a working field of 128×200 mm. Any images (photos), tables, graphs and diagrams are submitted as a separate file in the following formats: PNG, TIFF and CorelDRAW not older than version 19 (for vector graphics).

2.7. Captions to tables and figures are given in the text part of the article after the list of references.

2.8. All references must be given in continuously numbered footnotes as follows: Author and publication year without comma, a colon, page number, note number (n., Anm., etc.), figure number (fig., Abb., etc.), or table number (pl., Taf., etc.). Abbreviations for page designations are not used. Abbreviations for volumes, columns, tables, figures, etc. are used. Authors’ names and other information are given in accordance with the language of publication.

When referring to the work of several authors, if there are more than two, the footnote indicates is used the surname of one author and the abbreviation “et al.”; in the list of references all authors are indicated, regardless of their number. If the author is not indicated in the book or article, must be indicated the editor or compiler. If the article provides references to several works by one author published in the same year, they should be separated by Latin letters, which are placed in the footnote after the year of publication. If several works are given in the footnote, they should be arranged depending on the year of publication, regardless of the language of publication.

Example of footnote formatting:

Лурье 1947a; 1947b: 99–117; McPhee, Trendall 1987: 44, 45, pl. 8b, № 119; Шауб 2006: 345–349; 2007: 208–212; Подосинов и др. 2016: 133.

2.9. The list of references is placed at the end of the article. All works in it are arranged in alphabetical order – first in Cyrillic, then in Latin. The bibliographic description of non-Latin scripts consists of two parts: the original description and references, which are given in square brackets in accordance with the transliteration guidelines (see below). When transliterating the names of authors and translating the titles of articles, monographs and collections, it is recommended to adhere to the options used in the cited publication.

The author’s surname and initials are in italics. Next are the year; the title of the work; after a double slash – the collection or journal in which the work was published (if necessary); after a single slash, the editors or translators and commentators, if any; the place of publication. The titles of foreign journals are given in accordance with the abbreviations of L’Année Philologique Abbreviations (https://guides.lib.berkeley.edu/c.php?g=381579&p=2585381). The titles of Russian journals are abbreviated only in the original bibliographic description. The names of cities are given in accordance with the generally accepted abbreviations in the original bibliographic description (М., СПб., Л., Oxf., N.Y.); in references – without abbreviations. For periodicals, the volume, issue and number are indicated through a period. For articles and chapters in books and collections, the first and last pages are always indicated.
