The essay precedes the Russian translation of the short article by Vladimir G. Borukhovich (1920–2007), a renowned classicist, historian and translator, professor at Saratov State University. Borukhovich’s article was published in English in the German journal Zeitschrift für Papyrologie und Epigraphik (1998, 121, 165–166). Borukhovich disagrees with the interpretation of the Berezan graffito No. 166 proposed by Valery P. Yailenko (1982) and offered his own reconstruction and interpretation of the inscription.
