Abstract:

In this article, the principles of analyzing the structure (oikonomia) of historical works in Dionysius of Halicarnassus’ rhetorical treatises On Imitation, Letter to Pompeius, and On Thucydides are discussed. It can be said that Dionysius of Halicarnassus notes the consistency of story and narrative technique. The virtue of the first is clarity and the virtues of the second are variety and proportionality: a detailed description of battles and embassies, as well as account of speeches should be conditioned with the importance of the event, and the introduction should meet the requirements of rhetoric.
