Pontifex Maximus in early Rome
The etymology of pontifex from pons facere indicates a connection with the chthonic world. The attitude of pontifex maximus to the cults of the earth is manifested in the care of funeral rites, participation in the ritual of devotio, the cult of Vesta, Dis Pater, Saturn and Vulcan. The rite of consecration of the site for a temple, when the augur performed inauguratio, and the pontiff – consecratio, shows that once rex sacrorum and pontifex maximus ensured the balance of the earthly world with the heavenly and underground ones. The Ogulnian law, which admitted plebeians to the pontificate, reinforced the increase of the functions of the pontifex maximus.
