Abstract:

The paper deals with the current state of scholar discussion concerning the dating of the events of political struggle in archaic Miletos and the interpretation of literary evidence. Generally speaking, there are two schools of thought about this matter. According to the traditional one the sequence of events may be presented in chronological order as follows: the struggle of the two Neleids for the throne which led to the downfall of the monarchy and the establishment of the oligarchy with elected offices, tyranny of Thrasyboulos, some political quarrel which brought Thoas and Damasenor to a short-term tyranny, then lengthy period of civil strife (“for two generations”) settled by a commission of Parians, who reestablished peaceful government (oligarchy) ca. 525 BC. The second one places the events in the following chronological order: the struggle of the two Neleids for the throne, the downfall of the monarchy and the establishment of oligarchy which concluded with the harsh rule of those who were colleagues with Thoas and Damasenor, a long period of civil unrest, then Parian arbitration and the establishment of prolonged oligarchical government, tyranny of Thrasyboulos, then again the oligarchy resumed ruling until ca. 540. As these topics are still being discussed, the author submits the arguments of the advocates of both theories to show the weak and strong points in their reasonings.
